What Is Osteoporosis?

Hi everyone!

It’s me again, and I hope you’re doing okay?! As I work my hardest to raise awareness about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) across all of my social media platforms and it’s been a while since I went into detail about my health issues. So, I thought it might be a good idea to talk about my different health issues that are all down to the EDS. If you’re new to my blog and wondering what EDS is then scroll back to a previous post from around two years ago and you’ll see what it is. To put it in simple term, it’s a connective tissue disorder caused by a faulty collagen.
In this post, I thought I would talk about Osteoporosis. Growing up I had the odd stress fracture but we always put it down to the EDS. Although I can’t really recall in ever actually broken an actual bone. It was around the age of fifteen when I was referred to the (tba) team from Prof Galasko. Being thin is how I’ve always been and I was a late starter when it came to starting my periods. The team also referred me to the specialist at (the other hospital) who had me going through several tests. These were special X-rays machines called the DEXA SCAN. It’s not as intimidating as an CT or an MRI m, thankfully. Painless. I remember I had to place my arms/hands into water and grip on something in it. They did X-rays too. At the time, I was just used to being thin and underweight, my BMI has always been low too. When they diagnosed me with Osteoporosis, I was under the impression that older people got this, not young teenagers.
They sent me to a dietician who then put me on a high calcium rich diet which was full of diary products, bread and anything high in calcium. At the time, I loved eating lots of cheese, yoghurts, milkshakes, bread etc. I used to snack on them all the time. I was put on Adcal which was an orange flavoured big tablet that dissolved in water, disgusting and powdery tasting.
Now, I’m only able to eat so much dairy food as I have grown a little sensitive to too much of the lactose. This is from when I was struck down with Viral Gastroenteritis and it’s common to become lactose intolerant afterwards. I tried to cut it all out but slowly I’ve reintroduced certain things that were making my tummy uncomfortable and only eat so much.
I’m a believer in natural remedies rather than having medication for whatever. I often find that different medication doesn’t always have the right affects on me. I also get too anxious about the harm these medications cause.
What foods/recipes do you like to follow that are high in calcium and vitamins D? Please share them with me.
I’m sorry this post isn’t as knowledgeable or informative about how Osteoporosis affects me. It’s a little difficult not being able to remember certain details but I’ve spoken about everything I do remember. Thank you for reading this post and I do hope I see you in my next one. Take care 😘❤️xxx
